And in Forsaken they brake up immediately. And then in WoS they are already calling each other boyfriend and girlfriend? And as soon as they meet they kiss? All that subtlety thrown out. The most they did there was agree on a date to have tea and a book. It was an implied love that started shy but was groing little by little. It was really well done in Ixalan because it was subtle. Vraska and Jace's relationship was simply butchered. I also felt that the book suffered a lot from telling a lot but showing very little. And the awful amount of time he writes "gods-damned". The book even opens with "The spirit dragon and the dragon spirit were having a little chat". The writer simply couldn't show wisdom in wise characters like Ugin, who says dumb things like "Pot, meet kettle". Specially compared to the excelent stories that preceded it in Amonkhet and Ixalan.Ĭharacters all talked with the same voice. I get where you're coming from but to me War of the Spark was a really bad book. That said, I've heard horrible things about Forsaken, so I'll limit myself to watching a summary of that one.
I even shed a tear at Gideon's sacrifice. Remind me of Xantcha somehow, I don't know why.Īll in all, aside from some weird dialogue here and there, War of the Spark is a solid novel. Rat is now one of my favorite characters. I had seen Bolas manipulate Ravnica before his grand entrance.Īnd since I already understood all of those events, I could focus on the new stuff. I understood how Kaya had become guildmaster, and I cherished Ral and Tomik's relationship. I understood what had happened to Vraska because I had seen it. I was excited for the return of Hekara, because I knew and loved the character from the Gathering Storm. I left the story at the Beacon Tower with Ral, Lavinia and Kaya and then the novel opened (after the prologue, of course) a few moments later in that same place. In fact, it flowed perfectly from one to the other. I can understand that people heavily disliked the novel without having read the "prequel" stories first.īut given that I had gone through the 20 chapters already, I was able to appreciate the War of the Spark novel for what it was: the final third act of the story, the grand finale. It seems obvious to me that the Gathering Storm was meant to release before the novel. I had slacked on catching up with MtG stories, and really wanted to read (well, listen, in the Gen Doukeshi YouTube channel) everything in order, and I think this made all the difference.
